Reframing Aging in Colorado and Maine

If you work on behalf of older people, you know it can be difficult to have your message resonate with your audience. In 2015, Grantmakers In Aging partnered with seven national aging-focused organizations to commission ReFraming Aging. With the support of visionary funders, and working with the MacArthur Foundation award-winning FrameWorks Institute, the coalition released a toolkit to drive a productive narrative on aging issues, called Finding the Frame: An Empirical Approach to Reframing Aging and Ageism. ReFraming Aging is working to change the conversation, be more persuasive, answer ageism, and influence public understanding to create a more just, inclusive, and age-friendly society. Since the start of the initiative, several GIA members and national aging organizations have adopted the research of ReFraming Aging and are working to spread the learnings and recommendations of the research to their grantees and the greater public.

This conversation featured representatives from Maine and Colorado and learn how to bring the ReFraming Aging research and recommendations to life in your community and state. Speakers discussed the different strategies they are using and share how they are trying to create culture change in their communities and states. Presenters: Ruta Kadonoff, Senior Program Officer, Maine Health Access Foundation; Laura Lee, Senior Program Officer, Maine Community Foundation; Therese Ellery, Senior Program Officer, Rose Community Foundation; Janine Vanderburg, Lead Consultant, Changing the Narrative Colorado. Our thanks to The John A. Hartford Foundation for supporting the "Conversations with GIA" webinar series.
