NY Times: For veterans, a nursing home alternative

Medical foster homes provide an alternative to nursing homes for veterans who are unable to live safely and independently at home or lack a strong family caregiver. Conceived in 2000 by V.A. social workers in Little Rock, Ark., the program currently serves 535 veterans; it has cared for 1,468 since it began.

As the oldest Boomers turn 65 at a rate of about 10,000 a day, their homes can challenge stiff joints and waning eyesight. A Harvard University study suggests recovery in the remodeling market will be driven in part by contractors making improvements to help individuals go about their routines within their own homes.
NY Times: Alzheimer's drug fails its first big clinical trial

The most closely watched experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease proved ineffective in its first large clinical trial, dealing a blow to the field, to a theory about the cause of the disease, and to the three companies behind the drug. Pfizer, which is one of those companies, announced late Monday that the drug, bapineuzumab, did not improve either cognition or daily functioning of patients compared to a placebo in the Phase 3 trial.
