Children and Families Issue Brief

Summary

Poverty, loneliness, family dysfunction, and physical and mental health concerns are common obstacles for both young people and older people. However, history demonstrates that when they collaborate, they can address these issues while also generating dynamic communities.

Many initiatives urge young people to serve older people in the other direction. Home Safety for Seniors is a program run by the ManaTEEN Club in Bradenton, Florida, that involves young people in analyzing the needs of seniors and installing safety equipment in their homes. Time Out Respite in Philadelphia teaches college students to provide support and help to caregivers caring for a sick or fragile relative.
